If you've ever wondered how to turn fire green, how to make smelling salts for a fainting emergency, or how to save loads of money by making your own detergents, furniture, face cream, edible insecticide, or pop-up cards, this book will be for you. Coming soon to a bookstore near you, this volume contains hundreds of recipes, tricks and photos which will show how to MAKE ANYTHING.
- The Cleaning chapter delves into the science of cleaning to debunk the classic DYI vinegar solution. The products here actually work -- without extra elbow grease, and without phosphates either.
- The Food chapter is split between recipes which turn trash into wholesome meals, recipes for using some of the exotic ingredients called for in other chapters (ever tried hot ice cream?), and dishes which were just too delicious to leave out.
- The Pampering chapter features a moisturizer which looks, smells and feels like chocolate mousse. It also has recipes for lip balm, sunscreen, deodorant, foot, elbow, body, hand face and eye creams, bath bombs, anti-acne exfoliants, anti-wrinkle serums and everything in between.
- In Techniques you will learn to knit (with a downloadable flip book), how to fireproof fabric, to rewire a lamp with energy saving LEDs, how to cut glass, to soundproof a room, and much, much more.
- Health has recipes and tricks to relieve eczema as well as easy, safe and cheap treatments for a variety of minor ailments and pests.
- The Kids, Pets and Holidays chapters are full of fun and cheap projects going way beyond the old classics of slimy goo glue and toilet paper tree decorations. Although there are a few good slime recipes here too.
- Not everything turns out well all the time -- the Mistakes chapter describes some spectacular failures which happened during the development of this book. Things to avoid at all cost.
There's no way all this can fit in a single volume, which is why this book will extend online. Registered book owners will be able to download templates for pop-up cards and games, coupons for ingredients, and labels for all the moisturizers and detergents. Links to suppliers, photos and videos will be posted for all to enjoy. It's hard to explain with words how to brush a dog's teeth -- and so much more fun and instructive to watch. Readers will be able to talk back to the book and to each other in the forum. Unfortunately for now, they'll just have to wait: it's all under construction.
While you wait you can check out photos of some of the recipes, sign up to win a free pop up card, or view other projects by the author, Katherine Belsey |
